As we get started, we wanted to leave a little note for all of you on what therapy means to us. Over countless interactions, our individual views have merged to reflect a shared, yet distinct way in which we show up for our clients every day.
For us, therapy is a process of offering our clients a non-threatening and vulnerable space, making room for them to explore their boundaries as they begin to slowly open up – each at their own pace. It involves sitting with them as they experience uncomfortable emotions or struggle to navigate through a more helpful or supportive way of thinking and behaving. Therapy can entail supporting individuals as they unlearn patterns and expectations that they have been conditioned to accept, and it also makes room for a newer way of communication that doesn’t consist of judgmental or critical remarks; a space beyond labels of ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ and a warm relationship where so many people come to realize the power of expressing every deep or uncomfortable thought, learning to acknowledge that any and every thought or feeling will be met with acceptance. It entails discovery and active collaboration with us every step of the way. Therapy is embracing the innate uniqueness in each of them, and recognizing that every flaw or perceived weakness is something to celebrate, just as it is a way to understand thought, feeling and behaviour patterns. It is as much about learning to navigate interactions in complicated relationships, managing stress or learning how to set a routine, as it is about learning to sit with difficult emotions or gradually coming to the realization that they are enough, whole and complete just the way they are.
Therapy is also an exploration; a space for growth, and a kind of learning that involves tapping into individual potential, courage and stability. This can involve an awareness of their strengths along with a building up on skills that already exist - often all on their own, with a little encouragement at our end.
Every day our clients teach us to appreciate the unique ways in which emotions manifest themselves in different people. In turn, this helps us widen our beliefs about and the practice of acceptance not only in the way we show up with them, but also how we navigate all our relationships outside of the therapeutic space.
It’s all of this and so much more. We are hopeful that with each therapeutic encounter, not only will our ideas evolve, but that we will begin to view each experience from a space of more openness, curiosity, intention, acceptance and a deeper appreciation for all the things that connect rather than separate us.
